They’ve Done It! Twitter Increases Messaging from 140 to 280 Characters Providing So Much More Room!

In a recent Emarketing blog post titled, Twitter’s 280 Character Increase Could Be A Boon For Online Event Management, we discussed how event planners would benefit in many ways from a Twitter character increase from 140 to 280. Well, Twitter has finally done it and 280 characters is now the new reality. So what do we do with all of this room? Well, a line from Brennan Huff in the movie Step Brothers comes to mind, “It will give us so much extra space in our room to do activities!” So go ahead, get a little crazy and load up on hashtags, include more shout outs and go long with your tweets!
So why did Twitter do it? Here are the three main reasons Twitter provided for the new character increase:
- Easier to Tweet
- Keeping Twitter’s brevity
- Engagement
Our goal was to make this possible while ensuring we keep the speed and brevity that makes Twitter, Twitter. Looking at all the data, we’re excited to share we’ve achieved this goal and are rolling the change out to all languages where cramming was an issue. – Twitter Product Manager, Aliza Rosen
Here are some mixed reactions from the Twittersphere to the new 280 characters:
