Twitter’s 280 Character Increase Could Be A Boon For Online Event Management

Event managers should keep an eye on Twitter’s testing of a new 280-character limit. The new proposed character limit, if approved, will double the current limit, meaning more informative tweets for event planners, do-it-yourself online event software users and event operators. Twitter explained the reasoning behind the need for a 280 character tweet:
“Our research shows us that the character limit is a major cause of frustration for people Tweeting in English. Also, in all markets, when people don’t have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people Tweeting – which is awesome!” – Aliza Rosen
A Sampling of Twitter Research Data Behind The Proposed 280 Character Increase (Twitter):
- A small percent of Tweets sent in Japanese have 140 characters (only 0.4%).
- English, a much higher percentage of Tweets have 140 characters (9%).
- Most Japanese Tweets are 15 characters while most English Tweets are 34.
In the end, an increase in Twitter characters would be a boon for event registrants and event planners alike. More information on program start times, room or hall changes, special announcements and more are likely to make events more inclusive and help to increase event communications.
