Social Media or Not, Here We Post: Those Scary Facebook Folks

In this is edition of Ennect Online Marketing Software’s Social Media or Not, Here We Post, we look at how social media giant Facebook is dabbling in more than just keeping families and friends connected through social media posts. Facebook is actually using facial recognition in social media photo posts to store your digitized image in their user database in hopes of prospering through targeted ads. It is quite fascinating but a bit Orwellian in nature.
According to an article by Jared Bennet of the Center for Public Integrity, Facebook is working overtime to capture and track your every smile and frown along with every wink and blink… they are even tracking when you wear your favorite comfy cat pajamas or when you wear your favorite football team sweatshirt – the one with the stain – that you only wear on Sunday – during home games – because they have images of you wearing a different one for away games! O.K., maybe that’s a bit paranoid or maybe not according to Mr. Bennet.
“Facebook is working on advanced recognition technology that would put names to faces even if they are obscured and identify people by their clothing and posture. Facebook has filed patents for technology allowing Facebook to tailor ads based on users’ facial expressions.” – Jared Bennet of the Center for Public Integrity
Federal lawmakers are worried that facial recognition will violate consumer privacy and have just begun a dialogue on how to protect the American people.
The market for facial recognition is forecast to grow to $9.6 billion by 2022, according to analysts at Allied Market Research, as companies look for ways to authenticate and recognize repeat customers in stores, or offer specific ads based on a customer’s gender or age.
