Email or Social Media?

If you send out an e-newsletter, you might feel a bit behind the times.  After all, social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Google+ seem to get all the attention.  Should you abandon the email ship and start swimming in the sea of social media?  The answer is absolutely not!  There is no need for an either/or approach. Instead, use both email and social media. The Web gives you a plethora of ways to reach your audience so the best strategy is to coordinate all of your online marketing efforts. When you send out your newsletter, make sure you post it to you social media channels.  Why?  Three good reasons:

  1. There might be people who are connected to you on your social sites who are not on your mailing list.  If they find your newsletter posted somewhere, they might be enticed to subscribe.
  2. If you keep all of your archived newsletters on Facebook or Google+, it’s easy for people to refer back to your previous newsletters.
  3. Remember, email is still very effective! According to a survey conducted by The Direct Marketing Association’s Email Experience Council and Epsilon, the Q3 2011 North America Email Trends and Benchmark Results show a 7.8 percent increase in open rates since Q3 2010.   Access the full report here:

What’s the major takeaway? You never know where a person will find you on the Web so be everywhere!  And, if you add your Facebook or Twitter icon in your footer, you can invite those on your email list to connect with you on your social media sites.
